Description

Our Remarkable Reads Nature Bundle includes:

  • Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald
Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald is a profound collection of essays that shows the breadth and depth of art and design knitted in the natural world. Founder Gayle calls this “a wonderful set of essays about our natural world that had me gasping at times with her word prowess. She likens birds building nests to Abstract artists and wonders how both know when they are finished. She talks about meadows in the English countryside that once housed Theosophists and the ability of masses of migrating birds to instantly morph into designs in the skies that astound those who happen to look up as they pass overhead. No matter what she is writing about, I am interested, I am mesmerized, I am in awe of not only nature but her ability to describe it spectacularly.”
  • Oak Flat by Lauren Redniss
An arresting and powerful work of visual nonfiction about three generations of an Apache family and their struggles to protect the sacred mesa from a multinational mining corporation. Buyer Michelle says “Every Arizonan should read Oak Flat. It’s devastating but also a remarkable piece of reporting. Redniss hands the mic over to the men and women on both sides of the narrative to tell their stories. Oak Flat is a familiar tale of manifest destiny, resources, land control, and the resistance and resilience of Natives. What happens when our resources dry up? What happens when there is no more land to mine? What is sacred and to who? All important questions that are asked and pondered and dissected in this timeless read.”
  • World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
Poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s World of Wonders is part memoir, part nature treatise is “about our war and kinship with nature and the natural world. But also about family, identity and migration. It’s about the mountains and open skies of Arizona where her father took her hiking, the trees in Kansas, the humidity of Mississippi, fireflies and vampire squid. As Aimee says in the book, ‘What the peacock can do is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.’ And that’s what this book is, it feels like home.” Buyer Michelle goes on to say, “You’ll read this in one sitting and when you step outside, you’ll not see the world the same again. Memory and sky and smell will feel sweeter once you realize the wildlife and open sky were always there greeting you and making memories with you. This is a book that leaves you amazed and well…full of wonder.”
